One of the great things about the state of Florida is its unusual combination of the old and the new in the same place. It’s a state whose lively cities are very much devoted to engaging with all of the best of the best, and is on top of world culture in terms of music, visual art, and fashion. It caters to the sense of the new, and for resort hotels Florida seems to have a kind of golden touch.

Yet these same resorts are also characterized by a deep appreciation of those good things in life that last generations. History and nostalgia can sometimes interlace with each other in a way that produces lovely and delicate touches. There are also bold moves toward making the old stand out, and for this, one can’t ignore Florida’s history as a theatre town.

It still is a great place to see live performance, but it’s hard to go back to the days when movie houses also had Vaudeville performances. However, there are places like the Athens Theatre in Deland , where the restoration of the building also came along with ideas to present film and performance. Miami’s Gusman Center is equally eclectic and new programming is always shifting ideas of what can be done today, and Tampa Theatre can re-awaken the past when films were the big social event in the town. There are plenty more, and it’s well worth the time to look, and see what might be playing tonight.
