Las Vegas and Highway 375

Most people who come through Las Vegas don’t usually have extraterrestrials in the forefront of their minds. It’s pretty common knowledge that the town is near enough to the famous Area 51, and if one decides to travel Highway 375 to see it (and not be permitted to enter, of course), then they’re traveling on what’s been called Extraterrestrial Highway. It’s one of the great mysteries, or urban legends, or great cover-ups in the country, and it’s mystique is one that attracts the attention of people from all over the world. And if any of it’s true, then it also attracts the attention from other worlds.

Most guests arrive looking for an extended weekend of fun at the Las Vegas hotels , to let loose and enjoy the wild and wonderful things that go on here, day and night. For some reason, it does seem to attract its own variety of extraterrestrials, although they probably do return to human form when the weekend is over. Still, it’s an interesting transformation, and it’s hard not to go ahead and give in to the joys of the moment. If there are aliens that walk among us, this is a great place to blend in.

Florida’s Historic Theaters

One of the great things about the state of Florida is its unusual combination of the old and the new in the same place. It’s a state whose lively cities are very much devoted to engaging with all of the best of the best, and is on top of world culture in terms of music, visual art, and fashion. It caters to the sense of the new, and for resort hotels Florida seems to have a kind of golden touch.

Yet these same resorts are also characterized by a deep appreciation of those good things in life that last generations. History and nostalgia can sometimes interlace with each other in a way that produces lovely and delicate touches. There are also bold moves toward making the old stand out, and for this, one can’t ignore Florida’s history as a theatre town.

It still is a great place to see live performance, but it’s hard to go back to the days when movie houses also had Vaudeville performances. However, there are places like the Athens Theatre in Deland , where the restoration of the building also came along with ideas to present film and performance. Miami’s Gusman Center is equally eclectic and new programming is always shifting ideas of what can be done today, and Tampa Theatre can re-awaken the past when films were the big social event in the town. There are plenty more, and it’s well worth the time to look, and see what might be playing tonight.

Sydney’s Finer Qualities Can be found in a Basement

For over 35 years, The Basement has been Sydney’s most charming live music venue. As its namesake suggests, the space began in a single level basement that provided an alternative to the cover band and pub rock scene proliferating in the 70s and into the 80s as well.

Tucked away in Circular Quay, next to the better places to stay in Sydney, The Basement gradually expanded from its humble beginnings as a Jazz hub to now hosting a wide variety of local and international music acts. It also plays host to artists such as Jimmy Barnes, Prince, The Whitlams, Paul Kelly and Tim Finn to name only a few.

Currently, The Basement is expanding its creative doors to include the visual arts by teaming up with the Basic Space Galleries in a collaborative endeavor to liven up the city. In July, The Basement opened its arms to Sydney’s wider artistic community. This August, Matthew Gillett has had his premier opening of his work in the cozy upstairs cocktail bar. The exhibit features large scale manipulation of oils on linen, which are heavily influenced by the Japanese culture.

The Basement is located at 7 Macquarie Place; Circular Quay and Matthew Gillett’s artwork can be seen through September.

Worry-Free with Visitor Travel Insurance

When some people board a plane the first thing they do is buy airplane insurance, using the odd logic that they were never meant to receive tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars; therefore, by this purchase, they’re making certain that the flight will go smoothly. Far fewer people take the same superstitious precaution once the plane lands and they’re in the midst of a vacation, but perhaps they should, albeit for different, more rational reasons.

Purchasing visitor travel insurance may, indeed, be a small price to pay for the peace of mind it provides, especially when traveling inside the United States.

Using the similar logic as the people aboard the plane, some folks decide to gamble on not taking insurance, based on the length of their stay. Surely nothing will happen if the stay is only seven to ten days. But, of course, this rationale is just as faulty, because health problems and accidents can occur at any time; yes, the longer one stays, the greater that chance, but going without insurance, even for a few days, carries with it a risk, too.

While some are willing to accept that risk, others realize that if they’re going to tour Universal Studios in Los Angeles or take a trip to the top of the Sears Tower in Chicago, it would be best to really enjoy the experience worry-free by making sure they’re covered.

Boating is one of the favorite pastimes and recreational activities for millions of people and the types of boats that are available and also the basic orientation to their use is as diverse as the people that love them. In addition, there are boat accessories that represent lifestyle interests as well as specific boat features. And they are oriented toward fishing, sailing, canoeing or kayaking though of course some of the more popular accessories are also genre crossovers.

There are certain items that can be found on speed boats, fishing boats and sail boats and these generally relate to the comfort and enjoyment of the passengers. These include various waterproof containers that will safely hold cell phones, wallets, keys and other important personal items. There are others such as coolers and food containers that are also water proof and will keep drinks cool and food fresh .

Some other standard accessories are for safety and general maintenance needs. These can fall into necessary supply categories and items such as life vests, water proof jackets and other items fit the description. Other items include spare parts and emergency resource items such as an extra anchor and first aid kit. Regardless of the type of boating in which you engage, or the primary location in which you do it, there are some standard accessories and supplies that will contribute to your overall enjoyment and also your safety.

Choosing Your Halloween Costume

Every year we’re asked to make the choice again: What Halloween costume am I going to wear? Sometimes people choose political themes, arriving at parties and street carnivals as various Presidents of the United States, or taking on national and international events (it’s not too unlikely this year that some people will attend dressed as an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico). In arriving at a costume that’s right for you, consider your own interests. What if you had an interest in history? Then historical based costumes might be the way to go. You could arrive as one of the many Queens of England , or you might arrive as a Pilgrim or in an Indian Halloween costume in a tribute either to the first Thanksgiving or to U.S. national holidays.

Obviously, if you choose the latter, U.S. national holidays, there’s a whole range of ideas available to you: Dress as a soldier for Veterans Day, or a President on President’s Day. If you’re daring, you might go out dressed as a Cupid for Valentine’s Day. The point is that themes tailored to your own interests allow you to think beyond the ordinary range of ideas usually presented to you, or allows you to present more traditional costumes in a new way, in order to get the most fun out of the night.

Community Service and the Corporate Culture

There are a number of things that a company can do to improve the community around them. With all of the awareness of what companies have and what people don’t have it has almost become a sign of good will and an act of compassion that will come back with fervent profit when a company does good for the community around them. It is more than that however. In order to give themselves certain titles these days companies must provide some kind of community service. It is refreshing though to know that some places, like Southwestern Company were performing acts of community service before it became popular.

What people need to realize is that community service should not be something that the company just does, it should be part of their culture. If a company culture teaches attitudes that lead to community service it is a lot more effective for the company than those that don’t. The other thing that is important is what kind of community services they provide. The longest lasting ones are services like those that Southwestern Company provides, education. Education is something that is contagious and it not just affects the immediate community, but those outside the community too. This is something that can be really important.

What other types of community service helps not just a few people but everyone?
