The Old Fuses With the New in “The Rocks” of Sydney

There are many sights to see in the wonderful and cosmopolitan city of Sydney, Australia.  One of the most incredible places to visit, one that should not be missed while visiting is located on the western banks of the Sydney Cove at the foot of the Bridge.  This is The Rocks, and it is one of Sydney’s most visited locations.  Known as the ‘outdoor museum” this is an area that is of great historical significance, not only for the city, but for the entire country of Australia.  The history began when Captain Arthur Phillip and his fleet of eleven sailing ships set anchor in the bay that would become later, Sydney Cove.  Convicts cleared the banks and set up shelters, and the area eventually became a permanent settlement, known now as the Rocks.

In this area now there are many pubs, museums, cafes, and some of the top restaurants Sydney has to offer.  This is one of the oldest neighborhoods of the city, and the charm of the architecture is overwhelming, and fusion of the modern world with the old has given this area a style and a personality that is bot quirky and traditional.  The Rocks recently when through gentrification and has sense become a happening spot, not only for tourists but for the locals as well.  While the best of activities here center around walking, and looking, there are as stated many restaurants and pubs to enjoy as well as a couple museums.

The Museum of Contemporary Art is located in this district, as well as the Discovery Museum and Cadman’s Cottage.  Cadman’s Cottage is of significance as it is the oldest building in Sydney.  It was built for use as living quarters for the crews that worked on the governor’s ship in 1816.  Over the weekend there are many more things to do, as there is usually some sort of celebration or festival taking place.  Most of the times these events are free of cost.  The Rocks open air market place is one of the best places in the city to look for everything from gifts to bring home, to household items to arts and crafts.  This neighborhood is one of the best places to get a feel of Sydney, a fell of the history, and a fell of the now and should definitely be on the travel itinerary of anyone visiting this city in Australia.
