One of its darlings is Anita Fung. She placed first in the fifth biennial, and her work is really extraordinary. There is a deftness to her style, which gives a sense of almost alarming elegance to her work. She takes on some of the larger themes in art, such as representation, spirit versus matter, and cultural symbols, to make deceptively simple abstractions that are enormously compelling. She has spent time in London, studying at the Slade School of fine art, and has held lecturer positions in both Hong Kong and Macau. Her work is worth looking for, and shows a Macau that’s not always on the map.
