Lake Powell, UT

Lake Powell is located in a remote area of the south west United States on the Arizona – Utah border. The southern end of the lake is in Arizona but the vast majority of the lake is located in Utah. The lake is man made. It was made by the building of the Glen Canyon dam in the Colorado river in northern Arizona. The dam causing the river water to back up into the Glen Canyons and flooding them. It took many many years for the lake to completely fill up with water. The lake is composed of the main channel which is a mile or more wide. There are tons of side channels that come off the main channel with varying lengths. The side channels are navigable by boat as is the main channel. Just be aware of hidden rock because that can appear anywhere. Even in deep water you might encounter a submerged monolithic rock. Much of the lake is bordered by sheer rock cliffs. There is no shore line in these areas. The sandstone cliff tower above the lake some 60 to 100 feet and show black streaks that run down the cliff face where water runs off the tops of the rocks. Lake Powell has more shore line than the state of California. One of the main sites to see on Lake Powell is down an off shooting canyon named Forbidden Canyon. Down this canyon you will find Rainbow Rock bridge. This is the largest free Stanton sandstone arch in the world. A short hike up the canon from were you have to dock your boat and you are there. Rainbow Rock bridge is only access able by boat from Lake Powell or by foot for many many miles thought the Navajo reservation. Lake Powell can be a very relaxing vacation with so much to explore and noting to do but relax I enjoyed this as much as the Bali beach resort I visited last year!
