My class took our first trip to the Westonbirt Arboretum and we had a wonderful time. I really enjoyed learning all about all the variety of animals living at the Arboretum and learning how they prepare for England’s winters. While we were all eating lunch, we got to observe the birds closely. I was so thrilled, as were my other classmates, to see a woodpecker and a jay bird. That was my first time ever seeing those birds. I live in the city, in the Bristol Hotel were my parents work. So, I don’t get much of an opportunity to see any wildlife really, so this trip to the Arboretum was a real special treat for me.
After we took a long walk around the Arboretum, we got to sit down in a big room and make bookmarks using all the many colorful leaves we collected on our walk. Then we got to play on the playground they had in the woodlands. It had just rained while we were making the leaf bookmarks, so the playground was muddy, we had so much fun slashing through all the mud puddles. Our teachers who were there to make sure we behaved and didn’t get lost during our outing, were very upset with us to say the least. But, it was so fun for some of us who never experienced the real outdoors.
Fortunately, we were all escorted into the laundry area of the Arboretum. This was strictly for the staff, but our teachers begged that those of us who got all muddy be able to wash our clothes before we head back to our school. The Arboretum was very understanding. The girls and the boys were separated in different rooms where we could take of our clothes to be washed and dried. The room we were in was were they kept birds with broken wings. Today they had three birds recovering, one was a blue heron. It was so big and beautiful with a white cast on its right wing. I asked what happened to it and the staff member attending to it said it was injured by a hunter by accident. The hunter brought the wounded bird here to the Arboretum. The other two birds were Love birds who injured each other in a fight. Not too Loving I thought.
When we all put on our dry clean clothes and headed back to our school bus, I thought it would be nice to come here all the time. I would very much like to be able to help wounded birds. I told my teacher this and she smiled really big and told me she might be able to arrange for me to come here once a week and volunteer. I was so happy!
