Mallorca, Spain

Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain. The English spelling of the name is Majorca. With hot, dry summers followed by pleasant and cool winter months, there is ample opportunity for visitors to enjoy the more than seventy beaches that occur naturally on the island or to explore the stunning mountains that cover half the landmass.

The south eastern tip of Mallorca is known as the Archipelago de Cabrera and has been designated a National Maritime Territorial Park. It is teeming with marine life, unspoiled natural environment and historic ship wrecks. The waters are considered an underwater “Mecca” for scuba diving and snokelling. The island is also an ideal spot for sailing, cycling, hiking and rock climbing. Mallorca is a top destination for deep water soloing or psicobloc, where enthusiast rock climb over deep water.

The capital of Mallorca, Palma de Mallorca, was founded as a Roman camp on the remains of a Talaiotic settelment. It is also the capital of the Balearic Islands and is home to some of the island’s historic sites. These include th eCstell de Bellver, the Catedral de Mallorca, the Museo de Arte Español Contemporáneo and the famous Cathedral La Seu.

Mallorca is home to a number of other cities and village, some of which preserve traditional architecture and culture. Cala d’Or is known for its Jazz Festival, Deià is a small village in the Tramuntana mountains that is a favorite of artists, while Inca and Manacor are the island’s second and third largest cities.

Visitors to the island can stay in rental cottages, tourist resorts or relax in one of the five star hotels on Mallorca. Make sure to take advantage of the various markets and to try some of the amazing Spanish cuisine offered throughout the island.
